⚠️OSHA Safety: Industrial parking and staging areas where employees work are subject to OSHA 1910.303 illumination requirements. Inadequate lighting in forklift zones is a citable safety hazard. IP66/IK10 rated fixtures are required in areas with active vehicle traffic.

Light Distribution for Industrial Applications
Industrial yards and staging areas require different optics than standard parking lots
Type III — Perimeter & Fence Line
Asymmetric forward throw. Use at all perimeter poles and along security fencing — keeps light on-site, no trespass to neighboring industrial or residential parcels.
Type V — Truck Staging & Open Yards
360° symmetric distribution ideal for interior truck staging fields and open yard poles surrounded by working area on all sides.

🚛 Truck Staging & Dock Area
Truck staging areas are the highest-risk zones in industrial parking — large semi-trailers maneuvering in tight spaces require uniform, high-illuminance lighting to prevent collisions and ensure driver visibility. IES recommends 3.0–5.0 fc for active truck staging areas. High poles (30–35ft) with Type V distribution provide uniform coverage across wide staging fields. IP66 is mandatory — pressure washing and truck exhaust create harsh conditions.
Design Parameters
| Target illuminance | 3.0–5.0 fc avg |
| Min illuminance | 1.0 fc |
| Uniformity | 3:1 or better |
| Pole height | 30–35 ft (Type V interior) |
| CCT | 5000K (maximum visibility) |
| IP rating | IP66 required (washdown zones) |

👷 Employee Parking — Industrial Facilities
Industrial employees work 24/7 shifts — 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift changes create three daily traffic spikes in the parking lot. Night shift workers arriving at 10 PM and departing at 6 AM deserve well-lit, safe parking. Enhanced security (2.0–5.0 fc) is appropriate given the isolated location of many industrial facilities and the risk of vehicle break-ins.
Design Parameters
| Target illuminance | 2.0–3.0 fc avg |
| Min illuminance | 0.5 fc |
| Uniformity | 3:1 or better |
| Pole height | 25–30 ft |
| CCT | 5000K (security) |
| Controls | Photocell (dusk-to-dawn, no dimming) |

🏭 Loading Dock Entrance & Bay Aprons
Loading dock aprons where forklifts, pallet jacks, and delivery trucks meet require 5.0–10.0 fc for operational safety. This is among the highest-illuminance outdoor requirement in any parking application. Wall packs at the dock face supplement pole lighting and provide uniform coverage at dock height. IP66/IK10 fixtures are non-negotiable — forklifts can clip poles and dust/grit is constant.
Design Parameters
| Target illuminance | 5.0–10.0 fc (active dock) |
| Min illuminance | 2.0 fc |
| Uniformity | 3:1 |
| Pole height | 25–30 ft near dock |
| Wall packs | 60–150W at dock face level |
| Controls | Continuous (photocell) — dock never sleeps |

🔒 Warehouse Perimeter & Security Fencing
Industrial facilities typically have large perimeter fences protecting inventory and equipment. Security lighting at 1.0–2.0 fc along the fence line deters intrusion and enables security cameras to capture clear footage. Type III optics ensure all light stays on-site. Lower pole heights (20–25ft) with closer spacing are typical for fence line coverage.
Design Parameters
| Target illuminance | 1.0–2.0 fc along fence |
| Min illuminance | 0.5 fc |
| Uniformity | 3:1 |
| Pole height | 20–25 ft along fence line |
| Spacing | 50–70 ft along fence |
| Controls | Photocell (dusk-to-dawn, continuous) |

📦 Distribution Center Lot — Full Site
Large e-commerce and logistics distribution centers have enormous parking fields — 400–1,000 spaces — with heavy truck traffic and 24/7 operations. High-mast poles at 40–50ft with 600W–800W fixtures achieve wide spacing (110–140ft) to minimize pole count while covering 2.0–3.0 fc across the full site. Total installed cost is significantly lower with fewer, more powerful fixtures than many smaller poles.
Design Parameters
| Target illuminance | 2.0–3.0 fc avg |
| Uniformity | 3:1–4:1 |
| Pole height | 40–50 ft (high-mast) |
| Spacing | 100–130 ft between poles |
| CCT | 5000K |
| Controls | Photocell + 50% dim at off-peak hours |

Case Study
400-Space Distribution Center LED Retrofit — Chicago, IL
A major e-commerce distribution center near Chicago replaced 40 × 1000W HPS high-mast fixtures across their truck staging yard and 400-space employee lot with OT Series 400W LED area lights. The facility runs three shifts with peak traffic at 6 AM, 2 PM, and 10 PM. IP66/IK10 rated fixtures survived two Chicago winters without maintenance issues. Utility rebates of $100/fixture offset $4,000 of project cost.
