Emergency lighting and exit signs are legally required in virtually all commercial buildings. Non-compliance can result in fines, failed inspections, and serious liability in emergencies.

Key Codes and Standards

CodeJurisdictionRequirement
NEC Article 700ElectricalEmergency system wiring and power
NFPA 101 (Life Safety Code)Fire/life safetyExit access, illumination levels
IBC (International Building Code)BuildingMeans of egress requirements
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.37Workplace safetyExit route lighting

Emergency Lighting Requirements

Minimum Light Levels

  • 1 foot-candle average along the path of egress (exit routes)
  • 0.1 foot-candle minimum at any point on the floor (10:1 max uniformity)
  • Must activate within 10 seconds of normal power failure
  • Must operate for minimum 90 minutes on battery backup

Where Required

  • All means of egress (exit routes, corridors, stairwells)
  • Assembly areas (theaters, conference rooms, restaurants)
  • Windowless or underground spaces
  • Parking garages
  • Anywhere required by local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)

Exit Sign Requirements

Visibility

  • Visible from 100 feet minimum
  • Letters minimum 6 inches high, stroke width ≥ ¾ inch
  • Must be illuminated at all times (normal + emergency power)
  • Red or green lettering (varies by jurisdiction — check local code)

Placement

  • Above every required exit door
  • Along exit access corridors at every turn or direction change
  • Visible from any point in the exit access path
  • Maximum 100-foot spacing between signs in corridors

Battery Backup

  • 90 minutes minimum battery operation
  • Self-testing and self-diagnostic models preferred
  • Monthly 30-second test + annual 90-minute test required

Self-testing models (available from Auvolar) automatically perform monthly and annual tests, illuminating a diagnostic LED to indicate pass/fail. This significantly reduces maintenance labor.

Common Compliance Mistakes

  • No battery backup: Exit signs with no battery fail during actual emergencies
  • Insufficient coverage: Dark spots in egress paths — use a light meter to verify
  • Blocked signs: Storage, decorations, or signs placed in front of exit signs
  • Missing testing records: Inspectors require documented test logs
  • Wrong color: Some jurisdictions require specific colors (red in NYC, green in some states)
  • Dead batteries: Batteries not replaced on schedule (typically every 3-5 years for NiCd)
