IP Rating Guide for Outdoor LED Lighting (IP44 to IP67)
Understand IP ratings for LED fixtures. Covers IP44, IP54, IP65, IP66, IP67 ratings, wet vs damp locations, NEC requirements, and which rating you need.
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings tell you exactly where you can safely install an LED fixture. Using an under-rated fixture in a harsh environment is a safety hazard and code violation.
How to Read IP Ratings
IP ratings have two digits: IPXY
- X = Protection against solids (0-6)
- Y = Protection against liquids (0-9)
Solids Protection (First Digit)
| Digit | Protection | Size |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | None | — |
| 1 | Large objects | >50mm (hand) |
| 2 | Medium objects | >12mm (finger) |
| 3 | Small objects | >2.5mm (tools) |
| 4 | Fine particles | >1mm (wire) |
| 5 | Dust limited | Dust can enter but won't affect operation |
| 6 | Dust tight | Complete dust seal |
Liquids Protection (Second Digit)
| Digit | Protection | Test Method |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | None | — |
| 1 | Dripping water | Vertical drops |
| 2 | Angled dripping | 15° angle |
| 3 | Spraying water | 60° spray |
| 4 | Splashing water | Any direction splash |
| 5 | Water jets | 6.3mm nozzle, any direction |
| 6 | Powerful jets | 12.5mm nozzle, any direction |
| 7 | Immersion | 1m depth, 30 minutes |
| 8 | Continuous submersion | Manufacturer-specified depth |
Which IP Rating Do You Need?

| Covered exterior (soffit) | IP44 | IP54-IP65 | Damp location |
| Uncovered exterior (wall) | IP65 | IP65-IP66 | Wet location |
| Parking garage | IP54 | IP65 | Damp/Wet location |
| Car wash | IP66 | IP66-IP67 | Wet location |
| Food processing (wash-down) | IP66 | IP66-IP67 | Wet location |
| Swimming pool area | IP66 | IP67 | Wet location |
| Freezer / cold storage | IP65 | IP65-IP66 | Wet location (condensation) |

Common IP Rating Mistakes
Beyond IP: Other Environmental Ratings
- UL Wet Location: Similar to IP65+, US electrical code standard
- UL Damp Location: Similar to IP44-IP54
- NEMA 4X: Common for junction boxes, similar to IP66 + corrosion resistant
- IK Rating: Impact resistance (IK08 = vandal resistant, IK10 = high impact)
- Salt Spray Rating: Important for coastal installations
When specifying fixtures for harsh environments, ask Auvolar about IP rating, UL wet location listing, and IK impact rating for your specific application.
