IP (Ingress Protection) ratings tell you exactly where you can safely install an LED fixture. Using an under-rated fixture in a harsh environment is a safety hazard and code violation.

How to Read IP Ratings

IP ratings have two digits: IPXY

  • X = Protection against solids (0-6)
  • Y = Protection against liquids (0-9)

Solids Protection (First Digit)

DigitProtectionSize
0None
1Large objects>50mm (hand)
2Medium objects>12mm (finger)
3Small objects>2.5mm (tools)
4Fine particles>1mm (wire)
5Dust limitedDust can enter but won't affect operation
6Dust tightComplete dust seal

Liquids Protection (Second Digit)

2Angled dripping15° angle
3Spraying water60° spray
4Splashing waterAny direction splash
5Water jets6.3mm nozzle, any direction

Auvolar Fixtures by IP Rating

IP RatingProductsStarting Price
IP20-IP40Strip lights, troffers, downlights, tubes$5
IP54Some canopy lights, enclosed fixtures$35
IP65Wall packs, area lights, flood lights, vapor tight$38
IP66Select flood lights, vapor tight (8ft)$45

All Auvolar outdoor fixtures are minimum IP65 rated. Our vapor tight series (AN-VF) is IP65 sealed with silicone gaskets and stainless steel end caps.

Common IP Rating Mistakes

  • Using IP20 strip lights in parking garages: Condensation and exhaust will damage them
  • Assuming "outdoor rated" means waterproof: Check the actual IP number
  • Ignoring condensation in cold storage: Freezers need IP65+ even though there's no rain
  • Using IP44 in uncovered locations: Rain requires IP65 minimum
  • Beyond IP: Other Environmental Ratings

    • UL Wet Location: Similar to IP65+, US electrical code standard
    • UL Damp Location: Similar to IP44-IP54
    • NEMA 4X: Common for junction boxes, similar to IP66 + corrosion resistant
    • IK Rating: Impact resistance (IK08 = vandal resistant, IK10 = high impact)
    • Salt Spray Rating: Important for coastal installations

When specifying fixtures for harsh environments, ask Auvolar about IP rating, UL wet location listing, and IK impact rating for your specific application.
