Vapor Tight vs Standard Strip Light: IP Rating Guide

Compare vapor tight and standard LED strip lights. Covers IP ratings (IP20 vs IP65), wet locations, car washes, food processing, and when each fixture is needed.

Both vapor tight and strip lights are linear LED fixtures, but their IP (Ingress Protection) ratings make them suited for very different environments.

IP Rating Explained

The IP rating has two digits: the first for solids, the second for liquids.

RatingSolids ProtectionLiquids Protection
IP20Protected against objects >12mmNo protection
IP44Protected against objects >1mmSplash proof
IP54Dust limited ingressSplash proof
IP65Dust tightWater jet protected
IP66Dust tightPowerful water jet protected
IP67Dust tightSubmersion up to 1m

Standard strip lights are typically IP20-IP40: suitable for dry, indoor environments only. Vapor tight lights are IP65-IP67: sealed against dust, moisture, and water jets.

When You Need Vapor Tight (IP65+)

  • Car washes: Constant water spray and chemicals
  • Food processing plants: Regular washdown cleaning required
  • Cold storage / freezers: Condensation and temperature extremes
  • Parking garages: Exposed to rain, snow, vehicle exhaust
  • Swimming pools: High humidity and chlorine
  • Industrial wash-down areas: Hose-down cleaning protocols
  • Exterior covered areas: Loading docks, canopies
  • Agricultural facilities: Dust, moisture, animal environments

Auvolar's Vapor Tight AN-VF series (4ft 40W — 8ft 80W, from $45) features a sealed polycarbonate housing rated IP65 with stainless steel clips.

When Standard Strip Lights Are Fine

  • Dry indoor areas: Offices, retail backrooms, storage
  • Climate-controlled warehouses: No moisture exposure
  • Workshops and garages: Residential or light commercial
  • Utility rooms: Electrical rooms, server rooms
  • Retail: Stocking areas, back-of-house

Auvolar's Strip Light A-LS and AN-WR4FT series (4ft 32-40W, from $29) provide excellent linear illumination for dry environments.

The 55% price premium for vapor tight is worth it in any environment with moisture, dust, or temperature extremes. Using a standard strip in a wet location risks electrical failure, safety hazards, and code violations.

Code Requirements

The National Electrical Code (NEC) defines wet and damp locations:

  • Wet location: Subject to water saturation (rain, car wash, wash-down) — requires IP65+
  • Damp location: Some moisture but not saturation (covered exterior, parking garage) — requires IP44+
  • Dry location: No moisture exposure — IP20 sufficient

When in doubt, go vapor tight. The small price premium provides insurance against moisture damage and ensures code compliance. Auvolar vapor tight fixtures include a 5-year warranty covering harsh environment use.
