LED Lighting for Gas Stations: Canopy, Pumps & Security Guide

Complete guide to gas station LED lighting. Covers canopy light selection, pump island illumination, IES standards, explosion-proof requirements, and energy savings.

Gas station lighting is one of the most demanding commercial applications: it must be bright enough for safety, attractive enough to draw customers, and durable enough to withstand weather and vehicle exhaust 24/7.

IES Foot-Candle Standards for Gas Stations

AreaMinimum fcRecommended fc
Pump island (under canopy)20 fc30-50 fc
Canopy (drive area)10 fc20-30 fc
Convenience store interior30 fc50-75 fc
Parking area1 fc2-5 fc
Dumpster / storage area1 fc2-5 fc
Car wash entrance10 fc20-30 fc

Higher light levels attract customers. Studies show that well-lit gas stations see 20-30% more nighttime traffic than dimly lit competitors.

Canopy Lighting: The Main Event

Canopy lights are recessed or surface-mounted fixtures in the gas station canopy ceiling.

Fixture Selection

Canopy SizeFixtures NeededRecommended WattageAuvolar Model
Small (2 pumps)4-640W eachCN-40W ($42)
Medium (4 pumps)8-1260-75W eachCN-75W ($65)
Large (6+ pumps)12-2075W eachCN-75W ($65)

Auvolar canopy lights feature:

  • Slim profile (2-3 inches) for clean canopy appearance
  • 5000K color temperature (bright, clean look)
  • IP65 rated for weather and vehicle exhaust exposure
  • 120-277V universal input

Canopy Layout Tips

  • Place fixtures centered over each pump island
  • Space fixtures 8-12 feet apart in both directions
  • Use higher wattage near the canopy edges for uniform coverage
  • Aim for 30+ fc at pump level (top of vehicle)
  • Building Perimeter & Security

    Energy Savings Example

    Building8 × 150W MH = 1.2kW8 × 50W LED = 400W

    Annual energy cost$7,665$2,248
    Annual savings$5,417

Fixture cost: ~$2,800. DLC rebates: ~$1,200. Net: $1,600. Payback: 3.5 months.

    Special Considerations

    Explosion-Proof Not Always Required

Common misconception: gas station canopy lights do NOT need to be explosion-proof (Class I, Division 2) in most cases. The dispensing area is typically classified as an unclassified location above 18 inches from the ground. However, always consult local AHJ and NEC Article 514 for your specific installation.

    LED Advantages for Gas Stations

  • Instant on: No 5-15 minute warm-up like MH (critical for power restoration)
  • Better color rendering: CRI 80+ makes the station look cleaner and safer
  • No re-strike delay: After power interruption, LEDs come back instantly
  • Longer life: 100,000 hours = 11+ years at 24/7 operation (MH needs relamping every 1-2 years)
