LED Lifespan Explained: What L70, L80, and L90 Ratings Really Mean

Understand LED lifespan ratings. Covers L70, L80, L90 lumen maintenance, real-world operating hours, factors that affect LED life, and how to maximize fixture longevity.

LED fixtures don't suddenly burn out like incandescent bulbs — they slowly dim over time. Understanding rated lifespan prevents buying under-performing products and helps you plan maintenance cycles.

What Do L70, L80, L90 Mean?

These are lumen maintenance ratings:

RatingMeaningExample at 50,000 hrs
L7070% of initial lumens remain30% brightness loss
L8080% of initial lumens remain20% brightness loss
L9090% of initial lumens remain10% brightness loss

When a spec sheet says "L70 at 100,000 hours," it means the fixture will still produce 70% of its original brightness after 100,000 hours of operation.

L70 is the industry standard — it's when most people notice a visible difference in brightness. DLC uses L70 as the benchmark for its qualification criteria.

Real-World Operating Hours

Hours/Day100,000 hrs =50,000 hrs =
24 hrs (always on)11.4 years5.7 years
12 hrs (typical commercial)22.8 years11.4 years
8 hrs (office hours)34.2 years17.1 years

For a warehouse running 12 hours/day, a 100,000-hour rated fixture lasts over 22 years before reaching L70. That's effectively the useful life of the building.

What Affects LED Lifespan?

1. Heat (The #1 Enemy)

LEDs generate heat at the junction (where electricity meets the chip). Excessive heat accelerates degradation.

Solutions: Proper heat sink design (aluminum housing), adequate ventilation, not exceeding rated ambient temperature.

2. Driver Quality

The LED driver converts AC to DC power. Cheap drivers fail before LEDs do.

Quality indicators: Reputable driver brands (Meanwell, Inventronics, Sylvania), rated operating temperature range, warranty length.

3. Ambient Temperature

Operating above rated temperature dramatically shortens life.

Operating TempImpact on Lifespan
Below ratedExtended life
At rated (typically 40°C)Normal life
10°C above rated~50% shorter life
20°C above rated~75% shorter life

4. Power Quality

Voltage spikes, surges, and brownouts stress LED drivers. Use surge protection (SPD) in areas with unstable power.

5. On/Off Cycling

Unlike fluorescent, LEDs are unaffected by frequent switching. On/off cycling does NOT reduce LED lifespan.

How to Maximize LED Fixture Life

  • Ensure adequate ventilation: Don't cover or insulate heat sinks
  • Use fixtures rated for the environment: IP65+ for outdoor, rated ambient temp for indoor
  • Install surge protection: Especially in areas with lightning or unstable grid power
  • Keep fixtures clean: Dust buildup traps heat — clean annually
  • Don't over-drive: Higher wattage settings generate more heat — use the minimum needed
  • Auvolar Quality Standards

All Auvolar commercial LED fixtures are:

    • 100,000-hour L70 rated (most products)
    • UL/ETL driver certified
    • 5-year standard warranty (selected products up to 10 years)
    • Tested per IES TM-21 (standard lumen maintenance test protocol)
    • Equipped with thermal protection that dims before overheating

Our fixtures are designed for 20+ years of commercial use. Contact us for specific TM-21 reports on any product.
