LED Color Temperature Guide: 3000K vs 4000K vs 5000K Explained

Understand LED color temperature (CCT). Covers warm white (3000K), neutral white (4000K), and daylight (5000K) for commercial, retail, office, and outdoor applications.

Color temperature, measured in Kelvin (K), dramatically affects how a space looks and feels. Choosing the wrong CCT is one of the most common — and most regretted — lighting mistakes in commercial projects.

3000K: Warm White

Best for spaces where comfort matters more than task performance:
  • Lobbies and reception areas
  • Restaurants and bars
  • Hotel rooms and corridors
  • Residential-adjacent commercial (assisted living, residential lobbies)
  • Boutique retail where warm tones enhance merchandise

3000K makes skin tones look natural and warm, materials like wood look rich, and spaces feel inviting.

4000K: Cool White / Neutral

The most versatile option for commercial spaces:
  • Offices and conference rooms
  • Schools and libraries
  • Healthcare facilities
  • General retail
  • Light industrial

4000K strikes a balance between warmth and clarity. It's the safest choice when you're unsure — rarely looks wrong in any commercial space.

5000K: Daylight

Best for visibility, safety, and outdoor use:
  • Warehouses and distribution centers
  • Parking lots and building perimeters
  • Manufacturing and assembly
  • Quality inspection areas
  • Grocery stores and pharmacies
  • Gas stations and car washes

5000K provides maximum visual acuity and keeps workers alert. It also renders colors most accurately for inspection tasks and security cameras.

CCT Selectable: The Best of All Worlds

Many Auvolar fixtures feature CCT selectable switches (3000K/4000K/5000K on a single fixture). Benefits:

  • Order one SKU for multiple applications
  • Adjust on-site during installation
  • No restocking if the client changes their mind
  • Reduce inventory complexity

Look for "3CCT" or "5CCT" in Auvolar product names — these are selectable models. The DIP switch is accessible without disassembly on most fixtures.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing CCTs in one space: Different temperatures in the same room looks terrible
  • Too warm for task areas: 3000K in a warehouse makes it look dim even at sufficient lumens
  • Too cool for lobbies: 5000K in a hotel lobby feels clinical and unwelcoming
  • Ignoring CRI: A high-CRI 3000K looks much better than a low-CRI 3000K
  • When in doubt, 4000K is the safe commercial default. Contact Auvolar for CCT recommendations specific to your project.
