Foot-Candle Requirements by Space Type: IES Lighting Standards
Complete IES foot-candle requirements for commercial spaces. Covers warehouses, offices, retail, parking, schools, healthcare, and how to calculate fixture quantities.
Getting the right light level is critical for safety, productivity, and code compliance. Too little light is a liability risk; too much wastes energy. IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) standards provide the benchmarks.
Understanding Foot-Candles
One foot-candle (fc) = one lumen per square foot. It measures how much light actually reaches a surface.
Conversion: 1 foot-candle = 10.764 lux (the metric equivalent)IES Recommended Foot-Candle Levels

How to Calculate Fixtures Needed
Simple formula:Fixtures needed = (Area × Target fc) ÷ (Lumens per fixture × CU × LLF)
Where:
- Area = square footage
- Target fc = desired foot-candle level
- Lumens per fixture = from product spec sheet
- CU = Coefficient of Utilization (typically 0.6-0.8 for LED)
- LLF = Light Loss Factor (0.9 for LED, accounts for dirt and depreciation)
Example: 20,000 sq ft Warehouse
Target: 30 fc average using Auvolar 150W UFO High Bay (22,500 lumens)
Fixtures = (20,000 × 30) ÷ (22,500 × 0.7 × 0.9) = 600,000 ÷ 14,175 = 43 fixtures
Cost: 43 × $89 = $3,827 (before DLC rebates of ~$2,580)
