Dark Sky Compliant LED Lighting: Reduce Light Pollution & Save Energy

Guide to Dark Sky compliant commercial LED lighting. Covers IDA certification, full cutoff fixtures, amber LEDs, ordinances, and how to specify compliant fixtures.

Light pollution wastes energy, harms wildlife, and obscures the night sky. Increasingly, municipalities require Dark Sky compliant fixtures for all new outdoor lighting installations.

What is Dark Sky Compliant Lighting?

The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) certifies fixtures that minimize light pollution by:

  • Zero uplight: No light emitted above the horizontal plane (full cutoff / fully shielded)
  • Warm color temperature: 3000K or lower preferred (reduces blue light scatter)
  • Appropriate brightness: No more light than needed for the task
  • Smart controls: Motion sensors, timers, dimmers to reduce light when not needed
  • Dark Sky Ordinances Are Spreading

Major areas with Dark Sky lighting ordinances:

    • Arizona: Statewide outdoor lighting law (strictest in US)
    • California: Many cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara)
    • Colorado: Boulder, Aspen, many mountain communities
    • Hawaii: Big Island (near observatories)
    • Florida: Sea turtle protection zones (coastal areas)
    • Connecticut, Maine, New Mexico, Utah: Various state and local laws
Trend: Dark Sky ordinances are expanding. Even if not currently required in your area, installing compliant fixtures future-proofs your project.

Full Cutoff vs Semi-Cutoff vs Non-Cutoff

Only full cutoff fixtures meet Dark Sky requirements.

    Benefits Beyond Compliance

  • Energy savings: Full cutoff fixtures waste zero light upward — all lumens reach the ground
  • Reduced glare: Better visibility for drivers and pedestrians
  • Neighbor relations: No light trespass onto adjacent properties
  • Wildlife protection: Reduced impact on birds, insects, and sea turtles
  • Property value: Dark Sky communities often see premium property values
  • How to Specify Dark Sky Fixtures

When writing specifications or requesting quotes:

  • State "full cutoff" or "zero uplight" in fixture requirements
  • Specify 3000K maximum color temperature (required by many ordinances)
  • Reference IDA Fixture Seal of Approval if locally required
  • Include photometric data showing 0% uplight in submittals
  • Specify BUG rating of U0 (zero uplight)
  • Auvolar provides IES photometric files for all outdoor fixtures showing BUG ratings and uplight percentages. Request files at sales@auvolar.com.
